I live in Delhi. Whenever, I cross Yamuna river, it stinks. It is no more a river. It is a large drain for dirty water. Delhi uses up all the water that Yamuna receives upstream. And it throws in the river the dirty water. Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Jal Board would argue that they treat the sewage water and then only it is released in river. I have seen the plant. It works quite hard. But results are inadequate.
Is water pollution not solvable?
For solving any problem, first we need to identify the root cause of the problem. About 100 years ago we did not have such acute problem of water pollution. Difference between then and now is not only that the population has grown dramatically, but the real reason is the flushing of human excreta in our homes and offices with water. This is the biggest reason for water pollution.
Solution lies in dry disposal and burning of human excreta. It will be the single biggest revolution in achieving better water quality and containment of water borne diseases. Almost all the diseases like typhoid, hepatitis, diarrhoea happen because the water is contaminated. Let some technologists come up with new solutions to achieve this.
